Formed in 1986 in São Paulo, Genocidio emerged from Brazil’s fertile extreme metal underground—a scene that helped shape both early Brazilian deathcore (a mixture of extreme grind and first-generation black metal like Sodom) and the foundations of the later second generation black metal movement of the 90s. Genocidio’s debut full-length, Depression, expands their sound from their debut EP The Grave while keeping the same deep, cavernous vocal style. The album moves between primitive deathcore attacks and slower, more experimental passages. The title track begins with doom-like parts before shifting into a stripped-down, almost rock-like structure with marching drums, layered vocals, and prominent bass. Obviously influenced by 80's post punk bands like Joy Division and Christian Death without going full goth. Other tracks such as “Catalepsy” and “The Pit and the Pendulum” explore unusual chord structures and atmospheric riffing, while songs like “Synthetical Screams,” “Pyromaniac,” and “Violent Hate” return to their fast, grinding black roots. Comparable to the early chaos of bands like Sextrash, Vulcano, and Sarcofago, Genocidio stand out for their raw energy and experimentation into other genres. Created before the rigid divisions between black, death, and grind existed, these tracks reflect a genuinely unfiltered approach to extreme metal. Throughout Depression, Genocidio blend primitive Brazilian extremity with death rock and early black metal elements—an ambitious mix that highlights both their creativity and the restless experimentation of the era.
