Reissued by Wolfspell Records on 160 gram black vinyl, housed in a sturdy 3mm jacket with a 12" insert, this edition restores the original Astral Wings cover art and layout in faithful detail. In the spirit of early Gehenna and Dimmu Borgir’s For All Tid, Arkona’s debut stands as a towering example of mid-’90s symphonic black metal. Raw, fuzzy guitars create a distant, frostbitten haze while the band injects a distinctly Polish sense of melancholy and despair, giving the album an emotional weight that lingers long after it ends. All tracks except “Pogarda Dla Wrogów Imperium Wszechmocy” are re-recorded versions of songs from the An Eternal Curse of the Pagan Godz demo, newly rearranged and given Polish lyrics—stronger, more confident renditions that surpass the originals. The synths are prominent and monumental, lending the album a vast, almost orchestral scope despite its unapologetically “true” production. Bass cuts clearly through the mix, and Lewiński’s keyboard work adds depth with subtle classical touches, particularly in the opening moments. A major highlight is the use of real drums—Sylvian’s performance may not be mechanically perfect, but the organic feel only enhances the grandeur of the material. Opener “Skrajna Nienawiść Egoistycznej Egzystenecji” sets the tone with flowing, sorrow-drenched keys, buzzing guitars, and Messiah’s anguished vocals. “Epidemia Rozczarowania I Nędza Duchowa” and “Każdy Los To Cień” channel the epic darkness of Seen Through the Veils of Darkness, while “Pluję Na Twą Marność Psie!” delivers sharp melodic hooks and a memorable chorus. The album closes with a majestic, somber synth instrumental that seals its immersive atmosphere. Originally released on the cult Polish imprint Astral Wings and long difficult to obtain with the original cover, Imperium remains a prime document of the strength and individuality of Poland’s mid-’90s black metal underground. This long-overdue vinyl reissue finally restores a lost classic to its rightful format.
