This marks the debut full-length from the New York black heavy metal act Black Hurst. Suitable for listeners into Necromantia, King Diamond, Mortuary Drape, Master’s Hammer, and Absu.
The Hurst is dead following its sacrifice in fire, but this death yields to the life of supernatural energies possessing the ritual site with their obscure, yet palpable presence. Spiritual vestiges of the untamed, pagan past dwell in clandestine places and archaic remains, asserting their inscrutable nature through mystical subversions of the present.
Black Hurst channels a wide range of influences to deliver black metal with a pronounced heavy metal edge. The guitars lean into melodic phrasing reminiscent of early Greek and Italian scenes, while the pacing and structure take cues from classic 80s heavy metal and thrash. The result is direct, aggressive, and atmospheric without excess.
Tracks like “Skyclad Return” and “Possession Absurd” showcase the band’s driving approach, while “Moon Madness and the Telluric Pulse” brings the record to a dramatic close. Riffs and leads stick in the mind, and sparse synth touches enhance the aura rather than define it—framing the band’s approach to Pagan Black Metal Mysticism.
