Mortal Dread was an old death metal band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, best known for releasing a single demo in 1990 and contributing one track to a compilation in 1994. Active from 1989 to 1994, they left a lasting mark on the Midwest death metal scene—one still remembered today alongside regional pioneers like Dr. Shrinker, Viogression, Phantasm, and Morta Skuld. Their lone demo, Rancid Disembowelment, was recorded in 1989 and released in 1990 while the members were still in high school. In fact, the band had existed even before ’89, though during that early period they played mostly punk/crossover and never recorded anything until they fully shifted into death metal. NWN is proud to reintroduce this death metal relic to both new and longtime fans, helping to secure Mortal Dread’s legacy in the history of American underground metal of the late ’80s and early ’90s—an era when many essential recordings were created by teenagers with more angst and creativity than technical ability. This is death metal in its most no-frills, meat-and-potatoes form, and it’s exactly the kind I prefer.
